Design and Technology

The Design and Technology department aims to provide pupils with the opportunity to combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products.

Pupils are encouraged to think creatively and to solve problems both as individuals and members of a team.  Pupils study a range of subjects within Design and Technology including Food and Nutrition, Graphic Products, Product Design, Resistant Materials and Textiles. 

  • Throughout Food and Nutrition pupils discuss the Health and Safety issues within the working environment. They are given an insight into the nutritional value of foods focussing on healthy snacks and discuss a balanced diet. Pupils discuss food groups and the purpose for specific food products. Pupils prepare and make a range of healthy snacks. Pupils are assessed on their organisational skills and develop knowledge within this area. 
  • Graphic Products is based around a range of techniques which enable pupils to demonstrate their drawing/model making skills. Pupils follow the design process, gain knowledge about basic mechanisms and design and make a pop up card. They are given the opportunity to use ICT to present their work. 
  • In Product Design, pupils discuss the industrial practices within Design and Technology focusing on the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM). Pupils are given the opportunity to discuss existing products through product analysis tasks. The design and make activities allow pupils to produce a key ring and a desk tidy for a charity of their choice. The final outcomes are manufactured using a laser cuter to ensure accuracy. 
  • In Resistant Materials pupils demonstrate an understanding of the design process, through creating a design brief, analysing the task and designing their own jigsaw puzzle. Several skills are embedded into the project from understanding the properties of wood, using various tools, equipment and machinery and forming plastics. 
  • In Textiles pupils begin by discussing the health and safety rules within a practical Textiles environment. They are encouraged to demonstrate creative responses to the specified design brief and to use basic tools. The final outcome is assessed by pupils demonstrating a clear understanding of the process used to manufacture a patchwork cushion. 
  • Pupils are able to progress into Key Stage Five to study Graphics or Photography. 

The exam board for all Design and Technology qualifications is AQA.
