Labour Market Information (LMI)
What is Labour Market Information (LMI)?
Labour Market Information (LMI) helps us understand the world of work. It includes details about different careers, how to get into them, opportunities for progression, salaries, and the skills or qualifications needed.
For young people, a key part of LMI is knowing what jobs are likely to be in demand in the future and what skills employers will be looking for.
Why is LMI Important for Students?
In a fast-changing world where new industries are emerging and some future jobs don’t even exist yet, it’s essential that young people have access to reliable information about the job market and earnings to help guide their choices.
As Anne Milton MP put it:
“It is vital, in an environment where new industries are emerging and many of the most important jobs of the future don’t yet exist, that individuals have access to high-quality labour market information and earnings data to underpin their choices.”

Careerometer
Careerometer is an online tool that brings together reliable information about different jobs to help you explore career options. It lets you compare things like average pay, typical working hours, and future job prospects across different careers.
How to use the Careerometer
Type in the first career that you think you might be interested in and select from the drop-down list, then add your second and third choices to see the comparison.
Skillsometer
Skillsometer is a useful tool for anyone unsure about what jobs might suit them. It helps you think about your skills and interests, and how these might link to different careers.
How to use the Skillsometer
The quiz asks you to respond to a series of statements by saying whether you enjoy them, are unsure, or dislike them. These are grouped into six well known job categories (Artistic, Realistic, Investigative, Conventional, Enterprising, and Social). Based on your answers, you’ll get a shortlist of jobs that match your preferences.
Each job profile comes with a description, including typical pay and working hours. You can then use the Careerometer (above) to explore and compare these jobs in more detail.
